In 2017, the cost to MLAC per student was Rs. 10,000 (approximately USD 65) per month. The fees paid by students (excepting orphans and students on scholarships, who don’t pay any fees) is Rs. 6,000 (approximately USD 40) per month. It is apparent that this shortfall has to be borne by the College, since the costs cannot simply be passed on to the students. The resultant burden puts pressure on MLAC’s finances – which many times results in postponements of simple, but necessary, infrastructure improvements. A simple example is water – the dry season in Kal-Eliya can sometimes turn into a full-blown drought. And a shortage of water in a residential college housing more than 900 girls can cause major discomfort. The College has been considering a system of rainwater-harvesting to partially mitigate this perennial problem – but the financial costs have meant postponement. For MLAC to continue to improve and grow, it depends on the assistance of the wider Muslim community.
