About Muslim Ladies’ Arabic College (MLAC)

INCORPORATED BY PARLIAMENT OF SRI LANKA ACT NO. 41 OF 1991

Muslim Ladies’ Arabic College (MLAC) is a residential school with a student population of close to eight hundred girls, aged between four and twenty one. The total staff, including teachers, exceeds one hundred. MLAC was inaugurated in January 1959, with a roll call of just 27 students and one teacher!

With a view to ensuring the continuity of the College, MLAC was incorporated in 1991 by the Sri Lanka Parliament Act No. 46 of 1991. This Act provides the legal framework by which MLAC is recognised as a corporate body having perpetual succession.

MLAC is unique in Sri Lanka – and perhaps in the wider South Asia region – in that it is an Arabic College exclusively for Muslim girls, which has preserved its identity and uniqueness over almost half a century. Here, in-depth studies of Islam and its wider perspective are conducted as there is an increasing demand for the spiritual guiding hand today, more than ever before.

The student body currently includes 98 orphans – girls with one parent, or with neither parent, or without any known relatives, or who simply have no relative willing and able to look after them. These children are housed, fed, clothed and educated by MLAC. Often the Juvenile Courts refer such Muslim children to MLAC; so far, Alhamdu Lillah, none of these referrals have been refused a place at MLAC.

It is the vision of MLAC that the College would grow as an educational institution, and be a standard for others to emulate – an institution which will proudly show that the Muslim community in Sri Lanka can contribute to the total cultural wealth of the nation, and whose Alumni will go out to the country and the world as shining examples of Muslim women.

The tenth of January 2019 will mark MLAC’s sixtieth anniversary.
